American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) has honored Vermont Public Radio with a 2005 Gracie Award. The Gracie Allen Awards (also known as the Gracies) recognize exemplary programming created for women, by women and about women in all facets of electronic media. VPR’s locally-produced program Camel’s Hump Radio was recognized as an outstanding local program. National 2005 Gracie Award winners include Meryl Streep for HBO’s Angel in America, CBS News Anchor Hannah Storm, CNBC program host Suze Orman and Susan Lucci of ABC’s All My Children.
The honored episode of Camel’s Hump Radio features two books from the Vermont Folklife Center Children’s Book Series: Daisy and the Doll and Alec’s Primer. You can listen to the Gracie Award-winning episode of Camel’s Hump Radio online! VPR produced the episode in honor of the FolkLife Center’s 20th anniversary, and to celebrate the voices and traditions of Vermont captured in oral histories. The program focused on the family history of the Turner family from Grafton, Vermont.
The Gracies are presented by the Foundation of AWRT, the philanthropic arm of AWRT that supports educational programs, charitable activities, public service campaigns and scholarships to benefit the public, the electronic media and allied fields. The Gracie Allen Awards, established in 1975, honor programming and individuals of the highest caliber in all facets of radio, television, cable, and web-based media, including news, drama, comedy, commercials, public service, documentary and sports.
