VPR's Olympics Coverage

Porto: Beating The Odds

I was pleased that Governor Peter Shumlin honored Vermont’s 2014 Winter Olympians. This celebratory event reminded me how inspiring I always find the Olympics to be, including this year’s Winter Games.

Lange: Athletic Competition

Lange: Athletic Competition

Those of us who were once involved in winter sports – skiing, skating, bobsledding – might easily dismiss the spectacle of the Olympics. The starting line of a cross-country race, for example, represents sometimes lonely years of weight lifting, hill running, wind sprints, waxing, and thousands of miles of looking at the words Fischer, Rossignol, or Karhu shooting ahead of you in the snow.

Labun Jordan: Olympic Perfection

Labun Jordan: Olympic Perfection

The beauty of the Olympics is that it calls so many sports to our attention, and so many of them ones that casual viewers like myself have never tried before. It gives our imaginations room to consider how we might have excelled in one of these contests if only we’d given it a chance. After all, I’m clear that I’ll never amount to anything in baseball, basketball or soccer - I’ve tried those. But I have not yet failed at bobsledding, ice dancing, or luge. Not even once.

Gilbert: Olympic Verse

Gilbert: Olympic Verse

If you saw any of the Olympics, you’ll probably remember a snazzy commercial with striking visuals and voiceover by Robin Williams. It’s an audio excerpt from the movie “Dead Poets Society,” the story of a passionate, charismatic English teacher at a boys’ private school. When the film came out, I was at a private school teaching English, including the great American poet Walt Whitman.

Personal Stories Of Russia's Law Against Gay Propaganda

The Winter Olympics in Russia generated a lot of political debate in the months leading up to the Games. Among the criticism of Russia is a law that targets and suppresses expressions of gay pride.

Brattleboro Ski Jump Attracts Top Jumpers, But No Women This Year

The thrill of watching ski jumpers soar impossible distances in the air isn’t limited to television and the Olympic games in Sochi. This weekend in Brattleboro, world-class ski jumpers from at least five countries will compete in the annual Harris Hill Ski Jump.

Snowboarding Pioneer Kelly Clark Pushes Limits

Snowboarding Pioneer Kelly Clark Pushes Limits

On the eve of Sochi, Clark won her fourth Winter X Games halfpipe gold medal in a row (“The best preparation for a big event is competing in a big event,” she says) and is primed for the big stage.

Vermont Olympian Devin Logan Makes History With Women's Ski Slopestyle

Twenty-year old freeskier Devin Logan of West Dover will be making history this week as part of the first Olympic team in her high-flying sport. She’ll compete on Feb. 11 in women’s ski slopestyle, which, along with half-pipe skiing, is making its Olympic debut in the 2014 Games.

Thrills, No Spills, At Lake Placid Bobsled Track

Thrills, No Spills, At Lake Placid Bobsled Track

Just across Lake Champlain from Vermont are the Adirondacks, which are home to many of the country’s best bobsledders. The athletes train alongside luge and skeleton athletes at the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic Complex in Lake Placid. The sliding track there is a regular stop for the bobsledding World Cup races. It's also where visitors like VPR’s Sage Van Wing have a chance to slide down the track in a bobsled.
