I was pleased that Governor Peter Shumlin honored Vermont’s 2014 Winter Olympians. This celebratory event reminded me how inspiring I always find the Olympics to be, including this year’s Winter Games.

Those of us who were once involved in winter sports – skiing, skating, bobsledding – might easily dismiss the spectacle of the Olympics. The starting line of a cross-country race, for example, represents sometimes lonely years of weight lifting, hill running, wind sprints, waxing, and thousands of miles of looking at the words Fischer, Rossignol, or Karhu shooting ahead of you in the snow.

The beauty of the Olympics is that it calls so many sports to our attention, and so many of them ones that casual viewers like myself have never tried before. It gives our imaginations room to consider how we might have excelled in one of these contests if only we’d given it a chance. After all, I’m clear that I’ll never amount to anything in baseball, basketball or soccer - I’ve tried those. But I have not yet failed at bobsledding, ice dancing, or luge. Not even once.

If you saw any of the Olympics, you’ll probably remember a snazzy commercial with striking visuals and voiceover by Robin Williams. It’s an audio excerpt from the movie “Dead Poets Society,” the story of a passionate, charismatic English teacher at a boys’ private school. When the film came out, I was at a private school teaching English, including the great American poet Walt Whitman.

Just across Lake Champlain from Vermont are the Adirondacks, which are home to many of the country’s best bobsledders. The athletes train alongside luge and skeleton athletes at the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic Complex in Lake Placid. The sliding track there is a regular stop for the bobsledding World Cup races. It's also where visitors like VPR’s Sage Van Wing have a chance to slide down the track in a bobsled.
