Peter Fox Smith
Host, Saturday Afternoon at the Opera
Peter has been part of VPR since 1977, launching Saturday Afternoon at the Opera the first week VPR began broadcasting. Opera has always been one of Peter's passions. As a young boy visiting his paternal grandparents, he was treated to impromptu concerts by touring stars of the Metropolitan Opera performing with his grandmother. He is author of A Passion For Opera: Learning To Love It: The Greatest Masters, Their Greatest Music, released in 2004 by Trafalgar Square Publishing.
As a student at Harvard, Peter's doctoral thesis was on Wagner. An appointment at Dartmouth College allowed him to pursue his three passions: athletics, academics and the arts. He coached Dartmouth's women's cross country running team, taught opera courses to freshmen through master candidates and produced an annual arts concert for many years.
Peter lives in North Pomfret, pursuing his additional passions of horses and canoeing.
Joe Goetz
Host, Classical Music
Joe hosts VPR Classical's afternoon program. He joined Vermont Public Radio in 2007.
Joe came to VPR from KCME, the independent classical music station in Colorado Springs. He began at KCME while a student, quickly gathering a following. He holds a B.A. in Music from Colorado College and is a concert pianist. Most recently he performed at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, and completed a tour of Germany this past spring.
Originally Joe planned to become a scientist in the field of meteorology and atmospheric physics. But he said the hours in windowless laboratories soon took their toll. Having played the piano for most of his life, it wasn't until a music composition course midway through his sophomore year in college that he decided to pursue a career in music. An internship at KCME sparked the start in fine arts broadcasting.
