The Story (VPR)

1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Weekdays

Veteran CBC journalist Dick Gordon interviews people whose real-life experiences help us understand the news of the day or ongoing issues of importance.

No dispassionate pundits or sterile academics allowed. That's the credo of The Story. The live weekday program is passionate, personal, immediate, and relevant, focusing on the news where it changes our lives, causes us to stop and re-think, inspires us.

Listeners contribute regularly, sharing their stories on the program's topics.

The Story brings together ordinary and extraordinary people who can provide perspective on the news and inspire conversation and understanding:

  • When the Beltway is abuzz with exposés of prisoner torture, The Story talks with a man who tells how torture by police made his politics more radical, and with a government agent confronted with validating evidence obtained from uncooperative witnesses.
  • When the morning news reports on the Supreme Court nominee's confirmation, The Story talks to 20-somethings, 60-somethings and teen parents about their changing views on the right to choose.
  • When the Senate votes on education reform, The Story goes to school to hear what reform will mean to teachers and students, and sits in on a class with author and teacher Frank McCourt to hear how he inspires students.
