Business and civic leaders from the state's southeast corner gathered Friday to launch a campaign to reverse a looming economic crisis.

The federal government is going to contribute nearly a million dollars as part of a plan to build 27 units of affordable housing in a Vermont state office building in Waterbury made unusable by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene.

Lawmakers in Washington are facing another budget showdown in the coming weeks, and Congressman Peter Welch says he thinks it is unlikely they will strike a deal before $85 billion dollars in automatic budget cuts go into effect on March first.
