Jazz legend Archie Shepp has carved a career out of his work as a tenor sax man, composer, playwright, and social activist. He was a leader in the free jazz movement of the 60's and 70's, holding his own alongside one of his mentors, John Coltrane.
Shepp was raised in Philadelphia, but his prolific career has roots in Vermont, where he attended Goddard College in the late 1950's. Now 75, Archie Shepp returns to Goddard this weekend, to perform a rare intimate state-side concert, and to receive an honorary award.
VPR's Neal Charnoff speaks with Shepp about his education and career.
Archie Shepp performs at Goddard College's Haybarn Theater, Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
