Northern New England Braces For Winter Storm

Ski resorts in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont hope the season's first significant winter storm will erase memories of last year's meltdown caused by warm weather.

A storm already wreaking havoc in the South and Midwest is expected to move into northern New England late Wednesday afternoon and to continue through Thursday. The National Weather Service is predicting more than a foot of snow across most of region, except along the coast.

Those who enjoy winter sports are ecstatic.

Warren Knight from Smiling Hill Farm in Maine hopes the snow will allow the farm to open up to 25 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails later this week. Totally dependent on natural snowfall, he says he watches the weather more for skiing than he does for farming.

The Vermont Transportation Agency has a digital map that's frequently updated to show where there are traffic problems during a storm. The agency also has a network of cameras showing road conditions. The state says both systems will be regularly updated throughout the storm.
