This undated photo provided by the FBI shows Israel Keyes. Keyes committed suicide in an Alaska jailhouse, leaving behind an incomplete picture of a loner who traveled the country for more than a decade, killing victims at random.

There are few things as frightening as discovering that a serial killer has struck in the place you call home.

But that's the reality Vermonters have been struggling to comprehend as the news broke that a man named Israel Keyes had killed himself in his prison cell in Alaska, after confessing to a number of murders across the United States, and that two of the people he killed were Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex.

They were murdered in 2011, but the revelation that a serial killer was responsible didn't surface until this year.

VPR's Mitch Wertlieb talked with Chittenden County State's Attorney TJ Donovan who was Involved in the year-long investigation about the case.
