Edith Windsor speaks at the offices of the New York Civil Liberties Union after an appeals court ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. The ruling came in a case filed by Windsor.

A federal appeals court that covers Vermont, New York and Connecticut says the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.

That's the law that defines a marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals says that discriminates against gay and lesbian couples who are married because they're treated as single by the federal government.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to ultimately decide the issue.
