Rockingham Receives Additional Funds For Covered Bridge Repairs

The Vermont League of Cities and Towns has delivered additional money to the town of Rockingham for restoring the historic Bartonsville Bridge, which was destroyed in Tropical Storm Irene.

The event was captured on video, posted online and viewed thousands of times on YouTube.

It emerged as one of the most famous images of the destruction Vermont suffered during the storm.

Rockingham had a $1 million insurance policy through the Vermont League of Cities and Towns. But the replacement bridge project is estimated to cost at least $2.4 million.

After the storm, the League told Rockingham that the town's insurance policy did not cover all the claims for a covered bridge.

The League reviewed Rockingham's policy and reversed itself. The town received a check last week for $199,500 to cover additional claims, bringing the total paid on the bridge to more than $1 million.

Executive Director Steven Jeffrey told Rockingham's Select Board last week that a full review of the insurance on the bridge was done in August, before the League determined that funds were in fact owed to the town.
