Drug Agents Scour Apparent Meth Labs In St. Johnsbury

Two men from the St. Johnsbury area have been charged with conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. Thaddeus Gordon and Shawn Greenwood appeared in federal district court in Burlington on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in St. Johnsbury, police and drug enforcement officials and hazmat teams scoured two sites believed to contain the dangerous chemicals used to make meth.

St. Johnsbury Police Lieutenant Mike Henry says one site contained the chemicals and was cleaned up. The second, an apartment building, was evacuated for a search but no chemicals were found there. Henry says meth busts are relatively rare in the Northeast Kingdom.

"It is unusual, unfortunately it's the start of what's to come," Henry says. "We are going to see more and more of these meth labs because chemicals are easily purchased in any department store, Home Depot, that kind of place. They're just household chemicals mixed together for meth."

Henry says investigators do not believe there are any other meth labs linked to this investigation.
