A former Vermont lawmaker from Barre has died, within the same week as his wife passed away.

Oreste Valsangiacomo Sr., died on Friday. He was 92. His wife Helen died at the age of 91 in the same week.

Valsangiacomo, a Democrat, served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1967-1974 and 1977-2000.

His son, Oreste "Rusty" Valsangiacomo Jr., told the Times Argus that his father's "number one love was the Army and then politics."

Valsangiacomo Sr. was wounded in Germany in 1944 and returned to action in 1945. After the war, he became battalion commander in the National Guard, and was sent to Germany during the Korean War.

He earned three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his military service.
