Townshend Rethinks Proposal To Ban Guns From Public Buildings

After meeting with their town attorney, officials in Townshend are rethinking their proposal to prohibit guns in all municipal buildings.
Town officials raised the issue earlier this month when citizens expressed concerns that some people were carrying firearms during select board meetings. They said some residents felt intimidated.
But the town's attorney advised the Select Board that it can't ban firearms in town buildings.
The attorney says state statute allows guns to be banned only from schools and courts.
Select board members are expected to review the policy next week and likely vote down the gun ban.
Still, officials say they hope to address lingering concerns of those who feel threatened.
