Yankee Reduces Power Because Of Problem With Motor

06/18/12 5:50PM By John Dillon

Vermont Yankee cut its power to 36 percent this afternoon due to an electrical failure in a motor that controls the reactor's cooling water.

Plant spokesman Rob Williams says Yankee has two motor generator sets that are used to vary reactor power.

William says the electrical failure produced some smoke in the reactor building and operators restricted access to the area.

Plant technicians are trouble-shooting the problem, and Williams said that the plant will remain at reduced power until the issue is resolved. He said the electrical failure did not involve safety systems at the plant.
