Dorset Approves Homestead Property Penalty

In Dorset, town officials have approved a plan to charge a 3 percent penalty on properties not classified properly on tax rolls.

Vermont law requires that residents declare ownership of a home and pay the state's education property tax, and it says optional penalties of either 3 or 8 percent can be assessed by municipalities on any property not listed correctly.

It seems imposing homestead penalties is a confusing issue for many towns. In Arlington last fall, the town decided not to impose the optional penalty, giving them more time to understand the issue and inform the public.

Dorset's Select Board says it will tell homeowners about the 3 percent penalty change later this month.
