Vermont labor officials say the state's unemployment rate fell slightly in January to 5 percent.
The seasonally adjusted rate was a decrease of two-tenths of a percent from December and 3.3 percent below the national rate for January of 8.3 percent.
Vermont Department of Labor Commissioner Annie Noonan said Tuesday that at 5 percent Vermont has the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country.
She also says recent economic data reflects signs of the economic recovery.
Around the state, jobless rates ranged from 3.2 percent in Warren-Waitsfield to 9.5 percent in Newport.
In statement, Gov. Peter Shumlin welcomed the news. "We still have work to do to meet our goal of full employment - including jobs for the underemployed - but we are making real progress," Shumlin said.
