Dartmouth Wins UVM Winter Carnival

(Host) Dartmouth College scored the overall win in the UVM Winter Carnival, held in Stowe over the weekend. Vermont edged out Middlebury for a second place finish.

Colleges from across the Northeast competed in alpine ski races at Stowe Mountain Resort. Nordic competitions were held on the trails at Trapp Family Lodge.

Giant Slalom races were held Friday on Stowe's Main Street racecourse. Ben Morse, of Dartmouth, and Ashley-Kate Durham, of St. Lawrence University, each scored their first wins of the season.

In Saturday's Slalom races, Middlebury's Hig Roberts took top honors for the men. Geordie Lonza, of Williams College came in first among the women.

The Nordic Classic races were run on Saturday at Trapps. All Nordic races were run with 15-second interval starts, putting competitors on equal footing from the get-go:

(Start) "Way to go Petie. Go get ‘em.... Five, four, three, two, one... Go! Go! Go Peter!"

(Host) Middlebury's Patrick Johnson took the top spot in the men's Nordic 10K classic. Dartmouth's Sam Tarling was second and UVM's Franz Bernstein came in third. Sunday's freestyle race saw the same top three finishers.

Dartmouth took two of the top three slots in the women's 5K classic. Annie Hart, of Dartmouth, came in third while UVM's Caitlin Patterson took second. And on the top of the podium...

(Announcer) "Today's champion, representing the Big Green of Dartmouth, from Peru, Vermont. Her season - she has just been on fire. Let's hear it for today's champion Sophie Caldwell! (Cheers)"

(Host) Sunday, in the women's 10K match-up, UVM's Patterson edged out Caldwell for the win.

Colligate Nordic racers will return to Stowe next weekend for the Dartmouth Winter Carnival, due to poor snow conditions in Hannover, New Hampshire.
