Two Vermont colleges are going to be competing in an international competition to design, build and operate solar powered houses.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Thursday that Middlebury College and Norwich University of Northfield have been selected to compete in the contest known as Solar Decathlon 2013.

Twenty collegiate teams from the around the world will be designing homes that will be taken to Irvine, Calif., where they will be reassembled.

There have been five competitions since the first Solar Decathlon in 2002.

The contests cover everything from architecture, market appeal and engineering to comfort level, appliances and home entertainment.

A top criterion for the winning team is that each home must produce as much or more energy than it consumes.

In the 2011 competition Middlebury finished fourth.
