House Considers Measure To Defer Towns' Education Tax

The bill allows towns to defer their education tax payments to the state until late February.
Manchester Democrat Jeff Wilson said the legislation will help towns such as Jamaica and Wardsboro, whose budgets were overwhelmed by Irene-related damage.
(Wilson) "Under this proposal 11 towns have voted to take advantage of this deferment option and the amount of deferral in dollars is about $7.1 million."
(Host) The money was due in December, but state Treasurer Beth Pearce said towns could delay the payments as long as the Legislature quickly changed the law.
