Hazard Mitigation Program Extends Deadline
Friday, 01/06/12 4:04pm
(Host) Local cities and towns now have more time to submit applications for federal hazard mitigation grants.
The grants provide money for projects aimed at mitigating the risk for future flooding, such as home buyouts, road and bridge repair and culvert replacement.
Ross Nagy is with Vermont Emergency Management.
He says the deadline has been extended because of the size and scope of repairs and cleanup in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene.
(Naggy) "Local jurisdictions are finding themselves really overwhelmed with what they have to do in terms of administrative support for a lot of the infrastructure damage that they've experienced, and hopefully this will give them a little breathing room to work on the hazard mitigation portion of things that need to be improved to lessen the impact of future disasters."
(Host) The new deadline for towns and cities to submit applications is February 17th.
