Paul Fraser, emergency coordinator for the town of Jamaica, holds up an old photo that shows four homes swept away by flood waters in Tropical Storm Irene. The road built by the town, was constructed where the homes and their properties once were.

Tropical Storm Irene left incredible damage in its wake last August. What emerged from the wreckage were stories of Vermonters helping each other. Yvonne Daley, a journalist and teacher at San Francisco State, has compiled a book that revisits the stories of the people affected by the storm.

Made of photos and first-hand accounts, A Mighty Storm: Stories of Resilience After Irene is as much a historical record as it is a picture of the state’s character. VPR's Peter Biello speaks with Yvonne Daley about the book.

Net proceeds of sales of the book will be split among three charities dedicated to rebuilding Vermont. Yvonne will be signing copies and reading from A Mighty Storm on Tuesday at Bear Pond Books in Montpelier.
