Manchester Approves Demolition Of Historic Inn

A town board in Manchester has approved the demolition of the Village Country Inn.

The inn in the Manchester Village Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, but the building has deteriorated and officials consider it a hazard.

The Bennington Banner says a company wants to build a new three story, 80-room Hampton Inn on the site and the adjoining property.

Development Review Board Chair Diana Olcott, who voted against approving demolition of the inn, says the building isn't dangerous to passers-by and the town plan encourages keeping historic structures.

But Board member Tom Dyett, who voted in favor, says the building is falling down and no one is going to restore it.
