(Host) The faculty union and the administration of the University of Vermont have reached an impasse in contract negotiations.

One issue is whether new faculty should be required to pay the full cost of medical benefits after they retire. The union says the administration has refused to consider counter-proposals.

The Burlington Free Press says representatives of the union, United Academics, are planning a news conference today to discuss the issue.

UVM Provost Jane Knodell says the negotiations have reached an impasse. She says the administration is hopeful mediation will lead to a mutually acceptable contract settlement.

The statement did not detail the administration's position on specific issues.
