Grafton Working To Repair Roads

Numerous Vermont towns are confronted with the challenge of roads that are now little more than rubble after being washed away by the record flooding from tropical storm Irene.

Some roads are starting to re-open and power has been restored to all but 20-thousand homes and businesses. And emergency bypass is under construction on Route 4 in Mendon to allow utility vehicles to get through and restore power to others.

Almost every town in Windham and Bennington counties have similar stories of isolation and damage. This morning, we turn to Grafton. Town Emergency Operations director Bill Kearns says there are 50 miles of road in town and yesterday 40 miles were closed. Kearns tells VPR's Mitch Wertlieb there's only one road in now.
