Shumlin Says No Need For Special Vermont Yankee Session

Friday, 07/22/11 6:06am

Governor Peter Shumlin says there's no need for a special session of the Legislature to clarify the state's position on the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

Shumlin's comments yesterday came in response to an essay this week by Pat Parenteau. He's a former state environmental conservation commissioner who suggested a special session might help the state defend itself against a civil suit by plant owner Entergy.

Entergy is suing the state to block Vermont from forcing the plant to close next March.

In a decision denying a preliminary injunction this week, U.S. District Judge J. Garvan Murtha noted that only the state Senate - not the state House of Representatives - had voted to close the plant.

Shumlin says a special session is not necessary.
