Federal regulators say they have to delay issuing a new 20 year license for Vermont Yankee because officials are busy assisting with the ongoing nuclear crisis in Japan.
Last week, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission cleared the way for a new license to be issued this week. But Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the N-R-C, now says that license has been delayed. Sheehan said NRC staff have been providing technical assistance for the disabled Japanese reactors.
Sheehan said he expects that the NRC staff will issue the Yankee license renewal sometime in the near future.
