Vermont's "Safe Roads At Safe Speeds" Winter Policy Gets Mixed Reviews

Vermonters are accustomed to contending with often-treacherous winter weather. But road conditions are a constant source of anxiety and concern for some drivers. Vermont's snow and ice removal policy does not require bare roads, but rather "safe roads at safe speeds."

The policy, which has been around since 1981, has come under fire recently after several big snowstorms sent cars and trucks sliding off major roadways.

Scott Rogers, director of the Operations Division at the Agency of Transportation discusses the logistics, the science and the limitations of Vermont's winter maintenance policy.
