Vermont lost one of its most creative community members recently with the passing of Dennis Murphy of Plainfield. Dennis was an artist, a photographer, a musician, a scholar and a teacher who influenced generations of students.

He also was a well-known expert on Indonesian music and built the first set of Javanese gamelan instruments in the United States.

This weekend there will be a musical tribute to Dennis Murphy at the Plainfield Town Hall, featuring some of the groups in which he participated. Steven Light is the director of Fyre and Lightning Consort, of which Dennis was a member. He was also a student and friend of Dennis Murphy for more than 30 years. He joins VPR's Peter Biello to talk about him.

This weekend’s concert in his memory will begin at 2 o’clock on Sunday at the Plainfield Town Hall.
