Vermonters are the last in the nation to have the option of becoming an organ donor online. A web-based registry is up and running, and when the state DMV launches a new online license system this spring, it will be able to tell the registry which Vermonters want to be donors.

Dr. Antonio Di Carlo, Division Chief of Transplant Surgery at Fletcher Allen Health Care, says the new system is a first-person consent, tantamount to a living will. Dr. Di Carlo noted that there are between 125 and 150 Vermonters awaiting kidneys.
