Prosecutor To Investigate City-Owned Telecom
A former Chittenden County state's attorney will be a special prosecutor in the investigation of Burlington Telecom.
The Burlington Free Press reports that Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan has appointed Robert Simpson to the investigation.
A state report found that Burlington's municipally owned telecom, which is about $50 million in debt, has been violating its state license since it started operating five years ago and has little hope of recovering.
A state investigation was started last winter after it was revealed the utility had used $17 million in city money to cover its operating costs. The city money was not repaid.
