The holidays evoke thoughts of toys and games we received as children. But this isn't a new phenomenon. Jane Burks, Senior Curator at Shelburne Museum says toys such as marbles, balls, boats and tops can be traced back to ancient Egypt.

Burks contends that toys reflect the values of the particular society in which they were made. She says we can discern attitudes of adults towards children, the traditional occupations and the technology of a society by looking at the toys that were played with.
