Mozart Festival Closing Its Doors

The Vermont Mozart Festival will be closing its doors after 37 years.

Executive Director Timothy Riddle cites declining ticket sales and a lack of financing as contributing factors.

The festival began in 1974, performing 10 concerts in the Burlington area. It grew into a three week festival that drew more than 16,000 visitors annually to locations throughout Vermont.

Riddle says that audience size has been shrinking in the past six years. Efforts were made to revive interest, including hiring a new artistic director to revamp programming.

But Riddle says despite a boost in fundraising, ticket sales continued to drop, and the organization carries a deficit of over $325,000 dollars.

The Vermont Mozart Festival offices will close on or before January 15th.
