Shumlin To Tour Vermont Yankee
Gov.-elect Peter Shumlin plans to tour the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant this week, and is continuing to press for plant officials to resume pumping contaminated water from around the reactor.
The incoming Democratic governor is a leading Vermont Yankee critic, and will travel to Vernon Friday to tour the facility and visit the site of a radioactive tritium leak that was first reported in January.
Since then, the plant has pumped 300,000 gallons of water out of the ground and trucked it to an out-of-state facility for treatment, but stopped that process last month.
Shumlin wants that process to resume, and says doing so is important for good relations between the plant and the state.
