Vermont Yankee Soil Shipped Out
Monday, 06/28/10 6:06am
The Vermont Department of Health says about 310,000 pounds of contaminated soil and other solid waste from the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant has been packed into 10 tractor-trailer containers for shipment to a licensed radioactive waste disposal in Utah.
The Brattleboro Reformer says the health department posted a notice on its website on Friday.
Tritium has been discovered in groundwater at Vermont Yankee.
Entergy, which owns and operates the plant, has said it would need to dispose of 240 cubic feet of earth near the tritium leak. Vermont Yankee says soil that's accumulated as a result of any construction work done at the plant over the years apparently is also going to be shipped out.
