Vermont Yankee Shuts Down During Startup
Thursday, 05/27/10 6:06am
The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant shut down suddenly while in the midst of starting up again after a monthlong outage.
Plant spokesman Larry Smith says it's not certain why the plant went into automatic shutdown at about 3:35 p.m., but it's believed the shutdown may have been triggered by a problem in an electrical switchyard just outside the plant.
Smith says there has been no release of radiation as a result of the incident, and the plan is to continue powering up the reactor after the problem has been identified and repairs have been completed.
Vermont Yankee had been offline for a refueling outage since April 24.
