Legislature Returns, Faces Vetoes
Tuesday, 05/11/10 6:06am
Vermont lawmakers return to the Statehouse today, and they'll face a showdown with the administration.
Governor Jim Douglas objects to the size of the budget the Legislature has approved. He wants recent changes to the state and capital gains taxes to be rolled back.
He's also angry that lawmakers want to tap into as much as $10 million in reserve funds if the "Challenges for Change" bill doesn't succeed in saving as much money as hoped for.
Senate President Peter Shumlin says majority Democrats are trying to preserve important programs.
In addition to the state budget and Challenge for Change, lawmakers hope to wrap up work on Current Use legislation and health care reform.
The House and Senate will reconvene today. You can follow the action here.
