Saturday is the Spring Equinox.  And it marks the beginning of the Persian New Year which is celebrated throughout Iran, Afghanistan and other parts of central Asia.  The tradition dates back thousands of years to pre-Islamic times.

For thirteen days beginning Saturday, friends and family will visit, exchange gifts and gather for picnics. In each home a table is set up containing items that symbolize life and renewal.

It's a Persian New Year tradition that's carried on by many Iranians who live in this country.  VPR's Steve Zind asked one Iranian Vermonter to explain.
