Student Loan Bill Causes Worries at VSAC

A bill pending in Congress is causing worries in Vermont that it would cripple a nonprofit state college loan program.

A bill that's been passed by the U.S. House and awaits action in the Senate would consolidate student loans under a government program, taking them out of the private sector. The bill if passed would particularly threaten the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation.

The student loan organization funnels millions of dollars to college students and advises college-bound students and their families about the details and options for financial assistance.

Vermont's congressional delegation is being asked to make an exception for nonprofit organizations like VSAC so it can continue to provide services to Vermonters.
