Approval Of Lowell Wind Project Provides Boost

Wind energy proponents say the approval by voters in Lowell of Vermont's largest commercial wind project could provide a needed boost to a movement that has faltered.

Last week, Town Meeting voters overwhelmingly approved the Kingdom Community Wind project, which calls for construction of up to two dozen 400-foot wind turbines on three miles of ridgeline overlooking the town.

The project, which is being developed by Green Mountain Power Corp., still needs approval by Vermont regulators, but the approval by town voters marks a big step, and one that could help the wind energy movement.

James Moore, clean energy advocate for Vermont Public Interest Research Group, says the project shows how wind energy can be embraced when Vermonters are directly engaged in the process.
