Stowe Votes To Eliminate Auditors
Wednesday, 03/03/10 6:06am
Voters in Stowe have approved a charter change with a strange twist.
On the recommendation of the Vermont community's three part-time auditors, voters approved a charter change that eliminates the town's three auditor positions.
The three auditors - Joyce Lawrence, Barbara Allaire and Austin - say the work they've been doing can be done by Select Board staff and the town's external auditors. They've been getting paid $10.25 an hour and cost the town about $3,700 a year.
Austin said they just felt like their jobs were an extra part of local government that isn't essential.
The vote during yesterday's town meeting day was 685 to 132.
