(Host) Vermont National Guard troops have begun arriving in Afghanistan for their active-duty service.

VPR's Ross Sneyd reports.

(Sneyd) About 100 Vermonters are now on the ground in the area around Kabul and in eastern Afghanistan.

Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Goodrow says the rest of the 1,500 Vermont Guard members will join them by the end of March.

(Goodrow) "Right now, the formal, large block trainings have concluded at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Camp Attlebury and right now while the soldiers are awaiting transportation to Afghanistan, they are doing more of the individual trainings, or any specified trainings the commander may have designated for them, in preparation for departure."

(Sneyd) The Afghanistan deployment is the largest involving the Vermont National Guard since World War II. It's expected to last until the end of the year.

For VPR News, I'm Ross Sneyd.
