Lynch Calls For Investigation Of Vermont Yankee Leak

Thursday, 02/11/10 6:06am

New Hampshire's governor is calling for an investigation into the discovery of a radioactive leak at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.

Vermont officials believe the volume and direction of flow of tritium-tainted groundwater leads to the conclusion that it's reaching the Connecticut River, which runs along the two states.

Health officials believe the impact to public health would be minimal. Gov. John Lynch says he and other state leaders were told by the plant owner Entergy that no contaminated water passed through underground pipes at the facility.

But Lynch said seven months before the discovery, a Vermont Yankee official said no radioactive substances passed through those pipes.

Lynch wants the NRC to investigate the events leading up to and after the leak was identified.
