Hodes Wants More Oversight Over Vermont Yankee For NH
Monday, 02/08/10 6:06am
New Hampshire Congressman Paul Hodes is scheduled to travel to the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon and inspect safety procedures.
Hodes will be at the plant today to inspect safety measures and announce a new federal proposal that will empower New Hampshire with greater oversight over the plant's safety inspections.
Vermont Yankee plant officials said Friday they are investigating the possibility that a leak in an underground pipe connected to a sump pit may be responsible for a radioactive substance turning up in groundwater samples at the plant.
The tritium leak was discovered last month. Tritium can cause cancer if it's ingested in large amounts.
