CLF Says Yankee Should Close Until Leak Source Found
Tuesday, 01/26/10 6:06am
An environmental group is calling for Vermont Yankee to be closed until the source of a radioactive tritium leak at the plant can be found.
The Conservation Law Foundation wrote to the Public Service Board to say Vermont Yankee's misleading statements to state officials, as well as the threat posed by the leak, prompted its request.
The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission has allowed other reactors around the country with tritium leaks to continue operating.
NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan says it would be unprecedented for state regulators to try to close down a nuclear plant over the tritium issue.
