Education Board Support School District Reduction

The State Board of Education voted on Tuesday to support Education Commissioner Armando Vilaseca's campaign to sharply reduce the number of school districts in Vermont.

The board avoided setting a specific number of school districts. But it made it clear that it backs the idea of reducing the present 290 local school districts to a much smaller number of larger, regional districts.

Board Chair Fayneese Miller urged the board to take a firm stand in favor of the redistricting proposal.

Several board members said they doubt that any redistricting proposal will pass this session. But Vilaseca said he's hopeful that something can be accomplished. And he says it's important to keep the issue alive and before the lawmakers.
