Nov. 1 Vermont Yankee Deadline Passes

Legislative leaders say it will be "very difficult" to vote next year on whether Vermont Yankee's license should be extended after the nuclear plant's owners failed to meet a Nov. 1 deadline set by the Legislature to reach an agreement with the state's utility companies.
The Burlington Free Press is reporting that House Speaker Shap Smith said legislators need to appraise the power purchase agreement and how it impacts ratepayers and Vermonters.
Vermont Yankee spokesman Rob Williams said the company had asked legislators to extend the deadline but the two sides could not agree.
Utility officials say they are frustrated and making plans to buy power from other sources.
