Tal Birdsey started the North Branch School in Ripton as an alternative to what he calls standardized education.
VPR's Jane Lindholm recently talked with Birdsey at the school about his teaching philosophy and approach to learning through hands-on experience in the classroom.
Birdsey's book, A Room for Learning: The Making of a School in Vermont, chronicles the school's first year.
