Opiate addition continues to be a serious problem in Vermont. In recent years, though, heroin use has been largely replaced by abuse of pharmaceutical drugs. The health department, treatment specialists and law enforcement are all taking steps to adjust to the change.

Barbara Cimaglio is Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Bob Bick is the Director of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services at the Howard Center.  Lieutenant Paul Favreau is the southern supervisor for the Vermont State Police Drug Task Force. They talked with VPR's Jane Lindholm about addiction in Vermont.
