Industry group: Economy didn't hurt Vt. ski season

A statewide industry group says Vermont's ski areas had a pretty good winter despite the nation's economic woes.

The Vermont Ski Areas Association said Thursday the state's 20 alpine ski areas saw more than 4 million skier visits last winter.

That's down 6 percent from last season, but still an improvement over the winter of 2006-2007, when the number of visits dropped to 3.8 million.

Association president Parker Riehle says there is evidence that skiers and snowboarders pinched pennies last season, staying fewer nights and spending less on meals and drinks.

Riehle says Vermont's figures appear to be consistent with the national average. He says skier visits are down 5 to 6 percent nationwide.
