Around the turn of the century, nearly everyone in that small Rutland County town worked at one place: Hyde Manor. The huge inn was a vacation destination for wealthy Wall Street types. They would bring their whole families; nannies included, and stay for the summer.
When Hyde Manor could no longer make it as an inn, the buildings fell into disrepair and it became a different kind of landmark for cars speeding along Route 30. Now, trees and vines have enveloped it and only the crumbling tower is visible from the road. It turns out those cars whizzing by helped precipitate the demise of Hyde Manor. I got the scoop from a local resident in the know.
